Default Better gas mileage

I have a 2001 Cherokee Sport "6 cylinder". Is there anyway to improve gas mileage? I'm getting around 17 miles to the gallon.

You are in the normal range for the XJ. The only way you can really improve it is keep up all of your maintenance or buy a 4 cylinder car.

Here's what you should do. Never, ever drive it without hauling a trailer, carrying a cargo or in 4WD (traction conditions warranted). That way when you get mileage in the teens it won't seem so bad because you're working it like an XJ was meant to be used. Then you can get a bumper sticker that says "my other car is a Prius, that's why I'm driving this!"

tune up, proper tire pressure, remove unneeded items, high flow intake and exhaust. that's about it. don't lift it and use a road tire.

Is that mixed (probably about average), town (good) or highway (probably could be better)?

I have a 96 4x4 with 33's and get 16 almost 17. It fluctuates for alot of reasons why some of us get more than others. A buddy has a 99 and gets near 20 with 31's and 4x4.
Dont buy a throttle body spacer, drive it like a grandpa, do your regular maintenance - oil changes, tire pressure, clean air filter, spark plugs, cap and rotor and wires, keeping the weight out of it, drive stock tires. There are others you can do as well!
Now try to keep it cool in the summer months. XJ's are notorious for running hot. Good luck!

If that's mixed that's just what your going to get. You might squeeze a MPG or 2 by going through the exhaust and intake but your talking a lot of money and time for something that isn't a sure thing and well be marginal at best. Keep pressures good, keep up on maintenance, drive like an old man.

One thing would be DO NOT CHANGE AIR FILTER. You may think I am crazy, but any engine with a MAF sensor will get better gas mileage with a dirty filter. With a dirty filter, it increases the vacuum in your intake. With this, the fuel goes in better and mor evenly. You will actually see an mpg drop when you change it. But of course, you will still have to change it since paper falls apart.

Do not do what this guy says. Even IF he was right not changing the air filter when it gets dirty can cause other running issue and problems that will just cost you more money down the line. Just make sure it's a quality filter and your good.
