My 97 xj has 301,779 miles. What would be the best oil to put in? And I am fairly certain my dipstick is by stock. Can anyone tell me how many quarts go in?

check your OEM manual for quart levels. The oil drip pan is the deciding factor of oil amount. The danger with over filling oil, is that the connecting rods can slap the oil, frothing it. once its frothed, it does not pump or lubricate well. A guy, or girl, could install a larger pan if they wanted more oil (Cleaner longer).

I started using 10-40 weight especially in the summer. Im just about 300 k. Lucas oils are top notch, but more expensive. I'd recomend high mileage (for the seal additives) 10W30 in the Winter and 10W40 in the summer

Boy you might just open a big ugly can of worms with "what is the best oil". I can say with out fear of opening that can of worms that if you have a 4.0 you need 6 quarts of oil.
