Good early morning. Just got pulled over on my way home wrong work tonight cause my exaust is too loud, which is weird cause I pass atleast two cops everynight on the way home at midnight for the past 3 months Ive had the Jeep with no issues. Id agree tho, its pretty annoying and drones a lottt making it hard to enjoy music and conversation. People I bought the Jeep from (98 Sport, 4.0) did a terrible job welding the muffler, which is a Magnaflow Rumble, causing a pretty sizeable leak. I just want to replace the muffler back cause it looks nasty anyways.
Was looking at a Flow Master Flow FX. Its cheap, reviews say its only a little loud when youre giving it a lot of gas plus its straigh thru so it wont restrict the flow of the exaust gasses too much. Currently it comes out the muff, into maybe a foot of pipe then dumps a couple of inches inch front of the rear axle. Im lazy and cheap so I plan to just cut the exaust a little before the muffler, use some band lap joints to put in the Flow FX while using the least amount of pipe possible because I dont have a way to bend it and full length pre bent pipes are a bit out of my price range at the moment. How loud would it be if it still dumped in front of the rear axle but with the leak gone? Maybe with a 90 degree down turn since I know that more bends means less noise.
Or is my safest bet gonna be just buying fuull pre bent kit? I want it to be aggressive sounding but a lot more moderate so I can enjou music and not have to pay fines?
If you want quiet, ditch the pass through type mufflers your not changing power/performance with just a muffler choice anyways.
Pre-bent pipes are not costly, get your exhaust out the back of your jeep to mitigate the drone.
Didn't know they told that walker part without the entire kit which is like around $180 shipped on rock Auto.
What's wrong with the straight thru muff? I've seen a lot of videos of it and it's not very loud. I had a Flowmaster 40 Series which is a 2 chamber and it was obnoxiously loud on my 96 XJ that dumped in the same spot without the leak.
If I'm wrong what're some good multichambers that don't completely kill the sound? What about the Thrush Welded ?
Chambered muffler is fine, my point is the straight through/pass through mufflers don't do much for sound deadening. Add to that an incomplete exhaust dumping in any direction under the jeep in front of the rear axle just adds a heck of a lot of noise for the occupants or the attention of authorities.
heck my 87 comanche truggy has 2 pass through mufflers on it and though it's out the back of the jeep it's still loud as heck for those behind me
You need to get the exhaust to exit out the rear of the vehicle to stop the sound waves from echoing off the bottom of the vehicle, and also to pass inspection (if you need it) because you don't want exhaust fumes coming up through your floor.
Chambered mufflers are fine for flow. You won't notice a difference in power. economy, etc. Don't listen to videos to judge sound level. Videos can't convey sound level difference well, especially from a phone.
Thrush mufflers are popular because they're cheap and they work. Wouldn't be my first choice. I had a Flowmaster 50 for awhile. I liked it but eventually got sick of the noise. Went to a Walker Quiet Flow last year and I'm happy with it, won't be what you're looking for as far as sound goes though.

Funnily enough I bought it as a salvage. Passed the inspection with the exhaust leak and engine code for O2 sensor that came on on the way to inspection.
