Have the battery tested. If it is good start looking for bare wiring. I had the same problem with my 89xj. Check the ground wires closely. The main one at the battery and the small one on the firewall behind the carb/fuel rail. Good luck

earthtojohn, sounds like in for a bit of an adventure, bud. You have a short to ground, somewhere...unfortunately it could be anywhere. I would start looking at all of the usual areas:

1.) All around in the engine bay.
2.) All around the stereo and dash area.
3.) All around anywhere that looks like holes were drilled or metal cutting was done.

Somebody hacked into the wiring somewhere and you have a short.

Electrical problems are the worst.
A couple of stories about me chasing electrical problems on my wifes Blazer.
Driving down the road the interior lights would flicker on and off or sometimes stay on for awhile. After going crazy trying to figure out where the short was I finally found it. The lumbar switch for the driver's seat would short out depending on how you were sitting in the seat and cause the interior lights to come on. Ends up they share the same fuse, but you wouldnt think a seat problem would cause the lights to come on. It did though.
Recently her battery was draining overnight... again chased wires for days. Ends up it was the remote lock control module.

A way to chase shorts is to remove the negative (I believe) battery cable and put a test light between the cable and the battery. If something is draining it should light up. Begin pulling the fuses until the light goes out. However, if you have the door open while you are pulling fuses it will trigger the interior lights and cause a false reading. Either close the door, disconnect the switch or pull that fuse to begin with.

Good Luck.

Do you have a trailer wiring plug? I once chased weird electrical problems that diden't seem connected. Short form was the trailer plug had been smashed shorting verious wires at diffrent times and draining the battery.
