Default Bastard Packs???

First let me start off, sorry for the question I know it's probably common and a bit dumb and second I have a 1990 XJ stock suspension (sagging leafs) hoping to accomplish 3 inch for now as it is my DD. Ok what are s10 bastard packs I keep seeing them used in different applications and as suggestions in different threads and since the AAL is out because my springs sag and buying a kit with full packs, which would be ideal is unfortunatley unattainable as funds do not permit for that. Is it just a compliation of s-10 leafs and XJ leafs or is it simply a set of leafs out of an s-10 if so what years are compatible? From what I understand I can accomplish 3 inch out front using a set of Grand springs from the v-8 model, is year a factor in that or can it be any? Will I have to do any dropping, or relocating of anything to obtain the same ride quality I have now (it can ride like a tank my concern is death wobble). Articulation isn't a huge concern but some more than what stock offers would be good. Thanks in advance for any suggestions/input and again sorry for the question but hey you don't learn if you don't ask right

A bastard pack is taking the S10 spring, cutting off the eyelets on each side then using only the top leaf of the XJ spring pack you bolt the s10 pack to it.

How much lift does that accomplish and can it be altered in the future for a bigger lift?

The lift all depends on the conditions of both leaf packs and the order you put them together. some alternate XJ/s10/XJ/s10, some do XJ/s10/s10/s10. Its really trial and error to get what your after

Ok and building them is as simple as removing the center bolt and the strap things on either end? To measure the lift that would be accomplished do you have to reinstall them on the jeep everytime or is there a way to measure that.

oh and yes, remove center pin and those clamp things, you will probably need new ones. and just cut the eye holes off the top s10 leaf to fit under yours

Ok so mock them into place kinda thing and than go from there. I would presume measuring before removel of old suspension and after the mock up would be the most accurate way. Does the year of the V8 grand make a difference in spring size and compatability and will anything have to be dropped or relocated with just 3inchs.

I Have a 88 Limited, and it had very bad sagging springs, I got a set of S10 springs from the JY, I did not use the top spring (the one with the eyes) off the S10 pack and just pulled all the current pack apart on the HEEP, and added all the lower pack springs from the S10 pack , I reused the Pin from the S10 pack so I had to enlarge the hole in the cherokee pack just a little (5 mins with a dremel). Also I was able to reuse my U bolts, if yours are not in good shape "REPLACE THEM". this gave me about 3.25 inchs of lift. I used new 3" coils for the front, so I cant answer about the Grand coils, I think those only get you about 1" there are lots of theads on here about those.

Ok thanks I will search about the grand springs. Did you have to relocate anything i've read a few lift threads and everyone has different opinions/thoughts/suggestions i've read some that have gone up to five inches and still have stock track bars i've also read others that have gone up 2 and replaced them with adjustable what about sye, transfer case drop, pitman arm, etc i'm on a fixed budget and want to only buy the necessary stuff. Like I said death wobble is my only concern it doesn't have to ride like a cadillac

At 3" I did not replace the track bar, but my tracking is now off a little, I was going to do the track bar relocate (drilling a new hole) but I just need a new one anyhow, So I am just going to get an adjustable one, I do not have any wobble and did not do a TC drop. There are all kinds of mods. After 3 inches their are all kinds of changes that need to be made depending on how far you go up.

The forum is full of this information.

Ok thank you very much 89Xjlimited and all of you i'lllet you know how things turn out. Our junkyard here sucks as they don't deal with anything older than 2000 so it'll be a bit of a process to find the springs. Thanks again
