Help us with more info...

Is the banging in a regular pattern? Only when going over bumps? dependent on engine RPM or vehicle speed? Only in certain gears? Manual or automatic trans? Is yours 4WD or 2WD? Is the noise coming from under the vehicle, or within the vehicle but under the center console?

I can only hear the noise when not moving. Noise sounds like its coming from under shifter, sounds near transmission. I have a 99 XJ auto. Just installed rear shackles and dont remember sound before install.

Mine is more like a rattling noise coming from the same place you are talking about... Anyone have any input? Tranny mount?

Flex plate may be loose. Worth checking into

Agreed. OP, does your sound resemble that of the loose flexplate noise automatics experience?

Could also be the exhaust. Climb under it while running and find the noise

Is it like a rumbling/vibrating noise? If so, my 2000 auto 4x4 had the same symptoms until we changed the motor and transmission mounts.

Didn't you say you couldn't hear it unless sitting still?

When you hear it, push down on your transfer case shifter, and maybe a little to the right. Mine has this rattle and when I do that it goes away...no idea what causes it.
