So thanks to the help of everyone that posted to my most recent thread, I found out what was wrong and how to fix the problem. I can currently start the car and it runs fine, but I do need to get a new ballast resistor because I don't know how long the rigging now will last. I had a 1.1 ohm resistor on there before and I've been calling around and they are very hard to find. do I have to have the 1.1? Can I hook up a .8 ohm resistor or a 1.35 ohm resistor or will that not work?

Just hardwire it and skip the resistor. The resistor is ONLY there to reduce noise on the fuel pump circuit. If hardwiring it with a piece of wire is acceptable, leave it. Later models don't even have the ballast resistor.
According to the shop manual, the resistor lowers the voltage going to the fuel pump, to reduce noise as tjwalker said. Will eliminating it reduce the life of the fuel pump?

NO. Many, many RENIX owners have eliminated / jumpered their ballast resistor. It will not hurt your fuel pump.
