Default ball joints split ring?

Hey guys, I searched the forums, and couldn't find satisfactory reassurance:
I need to do an upper drivers side ball joint. I looked in the manual and online and saw reference to this 'split ring' in the steering knuckle.

So, If I'm not replacing the steering knuckle, is it safe to say I can get away with replacing an upper balljoint by: removing caliper, bearing/hub, pickle forking the two joints and tie rod, and using a conventional ball joint press on the upper joint in the control arm(?) to remove and reinstall a new one, without too much worry? or does this 'split ring' in the bottom of the knuckle threaten some other concern? (manual states install to .20) or other concerns would be appreciated. (i already broke a breaker bar getting the 36 mm nut off, heat, pb, heat, pb, etc.)
thanks ya'll

i did all of my ball joints in the front and left the old "split ring" in it and didnt have any issues, its been a few months now and i havnt seen or heard any bad things. i just used a ball joint press and it worked. i managed to bend the press while i was at it and had to eat a 100$ rental fee.

thanks much, I'll give it a shot, I'll probably heat everything up nice and hot before I try to take the tapers loose.
