I should have all the tools if you feel like making the drive to Sterling... help me change the fluids in my '99 and we'll see if we can change your ball joints?

I'd buy the ball joints new, really... I just looked into it and it looks like they press in, so there's one tool that I don't have... Right now I have to get my roommate's F*rd truck done so it'll pass inspection, then work on my stuff... the funny thing is I hate working on cars, but I'm cheap, so...

def buy them new. find a friend with some hand tools and a level drive way and you can rent the rest of the tools. the ball joints are something like 35 each new. Total of four on the xj. tools you would need would be a 13mm 12pt. socket, 36mm socket and the ball joint press. other than that just basic tools.

Those are considered high end oem parts. Buy either of the 2 and they will last longer then anyother part store ball joint

Don't be cheap on a part that holds your wheel onto your axle.

According to this, you don't need the 36mm socket. He just takes the whole shaft and bearing out

That is a good idea.
If your u joints are worn, you might as well do it all at the same time though.

I am going to warn you.

This job is such a pain in the *** and you don't want to do it twice. Save your money for the parts and don't look back.

The ball joint press is rented at Advance Auto for 99 and the axle sockets are 50 for rent. You'll need an impact wrench to get the axle nut off too

I bought my moogs for $175 for uppers and lowers on both sides. Did Spicers for the u-joints.

This seriously isn't a job you want to do more than 2x on the car (once on both sides). And if you that low on cash, you shouldn't be wheeling, it'll increase your budget on parts exponentially, and that's clearly something you can't afford.

Do it once, do it right, almost never have to do it again.

If this doesn't have you listening, check out pictures of ball joint separations and the immense amount of damage or death that can occur.

If I had to do it again, I'd buy spicers
