Default Bad Steering box question.

So I know for a fact my steering box is the reason for my sloppy steering. Now my question is when I'm driving there is a point where there is a slight pop feeling so when I go to try and adjust the preload screw to see if thats my problem should I put my steering wheel just before the "pop" or centered in the middle of my dead zone like I have been reading?

Adjusting that screw on the box will not help, it will only make the steering feel goofier. Make sure there is no slop in the steering linkage and plan on replacing the box.

The 'pop' isn't likely coming from the box, but if it was you couldn't adjust it out with the preload. More likely a bad linkage somewhere, loose suspension part or worn out coupling in the steering shaft. Or the box is loose on the frame.
If you turn the input shaft to the steering box, does the output shaft move immediately, or is there some slop in there? That's where the preload adjustment can be useful- in moderation- and only adjust it with the steering on center.

When I turn the input shaft it takes about an eighth of a turn for the output shaft to move. I cant hear the pop I just feel it. It feels as though a gear is skipping or something. I am probably doing the Durango steering box soon I was just hoping there was something I could do to fix it a little until then.
