Ok so it all started today when I had to drive 100 miles, both ways, to pick up my mother in law up at an airport. I usually don’t like taking my rig on longer trips like this because it does funny things when I drive above 45mph. Since I bought my xj when I've driven down the highway (around 55mph) randomly the car will jerk or jolt, very hard. It only lasts for a second but you really notice it. On the trip today my car did this harsh jolting thing a bunch of times, like ten, since the whole trip was on the highway. Now that I'm back in town my car is making this constant squeaking noise, sounds almost rotational if that makes sense, when I drive around. The only time when the noise stops is when the car has stopped moving. When I stick my head out the window to listen it sounds like its coming from right underneath the middle of the car. It doesn’t sound like the tires or anything... Please help. I've had enough problems with this thing. I can never start upgrading parts if things keep breaking. Would the harsh jolting while driving on the highway have caused this high squeaking noise??? Any ideas from the info I provided.... Thanks guys

Sorry I’m not too familiar with that kind of stuff, I'm learning but don't know a lot about the driveshaft’s yet. Can you elaborate a little for me? Thanks.

He is talking about the double universal joint in the front drive shaft (closest to the transfercase) . You have a few options , you can replace the u joints, or replace the shaftwith a rebuilt or used one.

to test if this really is the problem just take the shaft off the front differential and wire it to the frame. take a short spin and see if it has gone away. Saves a lot of work if it isn't the problem.

Ok so I was just underneath the jeep checking the U-joints, drive shaft and everything and couldn’t find anything that was broken or even loose. However I did notice one weird thing.... I grabbed a hold of the front driveshaft and was able to rotate it a little, maybe like an inch or two. When I rotated the front driveshaft the left U-joint in the front wheel would rotate with it but the U-joint on the right side didn’t move at all. That left U-joint by the wheel would kind of clank when it was rotating... Is this normal for my axle and driveshaft?
