All the adjusting and replacing in the world wouldn't stop my '92 from squealing until I got a Gatorback.
WNJE knows how to adjust the belt. We've been through all this before in earlier posts.

Could be a bad belt. If it is a Gates, get rid of it and get a Goodyear Gatorback. All the adjusting and replacing in the world wouldn't stop my '92 from squealing until I got a Gatorback. WNJE knows how to adjust the belt. We've been through all this before in earlier posts.
I've had a squeal from a loose belt before but this is a nagging squeal that gets progressively worse. It just sounds different. But you might be right, you definitely have been before! I still want to test the pulleys.

As a general rule, a bad bearing will give a grinding/roaring sound.
A belt will squeal/shreak.
Slipping belts can cause the pulleys to 'glaze' and make squealing worse. The pulley surfaces should be clean metal.
Belt Conditioner can also cause glazing and squealing on serpentine belts.

Should the idler pulley be rotating as the belt moves when the car is on?

Every question she asks is serious, even though the answer would seem obvious sometimes.
Yes, WNJE, my new Gates belt would start squeaking within 6 weeks to maybe 3 months of putting it on. I went through 3 or 4 of them before switching to Goodyear. That stopped it.
The belt tension had nothing to do with it. Went through replacing a lot of pulleys. Didn't help.

Tension is usually measured by deflection of a specific length of belt. On passenger side, longest exposed portion of belt between AC clutch and alternator, deflection by hand should be minimal, no more than 1/2' in either direction. 1" total. Belt should feel very tight.

Warm up engine util the noise starts. Remove the Serp belt and restart. Run for a few minutes. If the noise is still there it is either your distributor or flex plate. If it stops, you have isolated down to just a few components left not new in the front of the engine. The bracket that holds the fan clutch has a bearing, and of course the power steering pump. My bet is the distributor. Remove the cap and see if you have any side to side play in the shaft. Hope this helps
I guess I'm very late!
Easy! It's the tensioner belt bearing that you need to replace!
You take that one out and use a press to take the bearing out. $14!
You can buy the all assembly but it's about $40.
