Is it bad for you to downshift the aw4 trans? I have a glasspack and love the sound it makes but I want to make sure I will not kill the trans doing so. I know all the shift points (like I can shift it into 2nd as long as I am going below 65mph). I know that if I drive um rather quickly I shift it manually so the tc locks up to keep the trans running cooler (and it makes the jeep faster if you shift it right).

The max speed you can achieve in all gears, from my experience, is: 1st 35mph 2nd 68 (78 if you shift maually) 3rd well past 100 4th...

Is never a good idea to manually down shift a auto trans like you describe. especially to hear the exhaust sounds. Especially a AW4 which is going to be going from 3rd or OD to 1st. If you have to hear the exhast better run with the rear hatch open. Ther are mods you can do to be fully manual shift-able.

No it's not a good idea. If really want to hear it rapping off. record it, and play it back through your stereo.

Persoanlly, I wouldn't think it's too bad for it, if done at reasonable speeds. (Like if you're trying to avoid using up the brakes going down a steep hill.) However, whacking the poor thing into 2nd at highway speeds is abuse. Plain and simple. It may not fail catastrophically, but I'd wager you're shortening its life. (And also, not that you care, but these motors sound truly stupid with loud pipes.)

I wouldn't recommend downshifting even if it does sound cool, especially going into second at anywhere near 65. this will only cause unneeded wear and tear on your transmission, u-joints, differential, etc.

I have downshifted in an automatic, but that comes with knowing when the kick downs happen. You can burn out the clutch packs. If you have $600 for clutch packs and want to learn the hard way, keep doing it.

I knew that it was not good for it but I did not realize it was truly awful for it.

Thanks for the input.

Basically you will be wearing down both sides of the clutch packs if I am correct here..

I am not running straight pipes, I just have a resonating muffler (Cherybomb glasspack) and it sounds pretty beefy for a I6. I do agree that straight pipes do sound like crap, and it decreases performance dramatically. Thats why I chose the exhaust I did. Its a loud that I can live with and not **** everyone off at 6 in the morning or 10 at night.

Everyone I know who does what you do kills their transmission very fast. If you wanna do that kinda stuff get a manual, and make sure to rev match, otherwise you'll still brake the transmission.

I have a friend who played with his auto like that and ended up putting it in reverse at 65mph! Almost killed himself and his transmission was never the same.

It will squeal the tires just a little.. and your car will act like you stuck it in nuetral and shut it off.
I did it once. .... not on purpose, and I was only going only 15, but I nearly **** myself.

Yup, not a good idea. Let the transmission shift when it wants to shift.

I rebuilt a few trans. It's not worth it. When it stops work, will be when u really need it to! They are fairly easy to rebuild with the right tools and a new torque converter, but not worth the trans whining when you are on the hwy! Manual trans it will work 3 times, but the throw out will look chewed up.

This iPad is getting annoying! Freaking typos!
