bad fuel pump = heat soak conditions?
96 xj 4x4 auto
i have been having some what seemed like heat soak problem on my xj for quite some time so today i went out and got a fuel pressure tester and and it red with the ignition on on and engine off at 22psi. and when the engine was on it was jumping from 20 to 30 psi rapidly. i know i need to replace the pump now but could the lack of pressure from the fuel pump have caused the heat soak symptoms i am having? and another thing i have been looking at getting a carter fuel pump are they any good?

a needle doing the flutter is usually a failed fuel pressure reg.
no idea on the carter pumps but denso makes a full meal deal for the fuel pump assembly and is an OEM supplier. it's not uncommon to see a denso fuel pump last well past 250k miles
it appears you use a standard motor PR210 for the reg and denso #9500167 for the pump kit both are available at rockauto
on another note try to avoid standard parts with a T at the end of the number. it's the cheaper line and often not all that much cheaper

The spec for fuel pressure for a 96 is 49 psi. I recommend a replacement of the entire fuel pump assembly. My favorite is Bosch. Carter is second. I will not use nor recommend any Airtex products.
Good luck!
