Default Bad Front Axle U-Joint

I’m getting a grinding/popping noise from the front end while turning left under acceleration. I am also getting vibration in the floorboard while decelerating from highway speeds. I removed the front drive shaft and that was not the issue. Does this sound like bad u-joints? Both sides sound about the same. Upper and lower control arms are new and all steering components appear tight.

Jack up the front end and support the axle on stands. Turn the wheels all the way to one direction and spin the tire by hand. Does the u-joint bind up in one position or make a bunch of noise. See if you can get in there and move it around at all.

even with the shaft out the front axles still rotate when driving, the hubs are always locked in. Popping/grinding while turning sounds a lot like u joints. If u have any visible play in the joint it’s due for replacement. As mentioned above, check for binding with wheels turned. If there’s no play or binding and you only get the grinding going left, check your right front wheel bearing.

Thanks guys. I looked everything over again and no matter what angle I do there is no noise or play in the U-joints. From the outside of the wheel I am getting a consistent clicking from the wheel bearing on the passenger side, so I guess I will start there.

How many miles on the rig? If your pulling the hub, might as well splurge for new shaft u-joints, they are already in your lap

156K. I had the same thought. Not very expensive and are bound to need replacing soon enough. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to knock it out, so it's at the shop now getting hubs and u-joints

Well, if your going to pay them...you might as well get the complete works...no use punching it all out in a year or two for new u joints
