knocking noise when turning.

My front end makes a knocking noise when turning. Kinda sounds like a CV axle with a torn boot. I'm not very good with major automotive repairs, but willing to learn.

Sounds like the front u-joints are binding up when pressure is applied to the joint when turning. Look under the front end and see if the u-joints have a brown rusty appearance. The original factory u-joints do not have a grease fitting, so when the u-joint dries out it produces a clicking sound. If not the u-joints I could look at the wheel bearings as the next possible cause.

I just replaced my axle U-joint today and before I did there was sort of a ratcheting sound or knocking. One of the most obvious ways I could tell that the u-joint was bad was that I could move the axle joint around pretty easily as seen in the picture below.
