Default bad brakes

well i broke my main rear brake line on my 2000 sport. After replacin the metal line and the rubber line. Ive bled the brakes numerous times. And start it up and the brake pedal goes right to the floor. There is no abs brake on it so i cant figure out why it wont work. i was told that since it ran out of fluid and i drove it that my master cylinder could be junk. Just wondering what you guys think.

Bleeding the brakes in that situation can take a very long time. I would suggest trying to bleed them again. You could have gotten a lot of air in the line if you broke the line. Use the drain hose into a fresh bottle of brake fluid to prevent any air backing up into the line during bleeding. I would bleed the back, then go under the front and bleed the fronts as well...you might be full of air and not even know it...that brake fluid has to go somewhere. I would look at the master, but since it happened with a broken line, I wouldnt think its the culprit...

In an older vehicle the rubber cups actually wear into the bore of the master cylinder. If you have exceeded the normal travel of the pedal then usualy you could have very well damaged the rubber cups in the M.C.

It takes a bit to get them bled. I replaced all of my rubber lines and repalced a 4 foot section of hard line along the rail and it took a vacuum pump and a bottle of fluid to get the pedal back.

I had a plymouth caravan that I lost a line on. Just by going all the way to the floor I wound up cutting a few grooves in the M.C. cups and had to replace the M.C. because of it.

One other option is that you have to bleed the M.C. itself if you ran it all the way empty. You can crack open the fittings at the M.C. and have someone press on the brakes not exceeding Half of the pedal travel. Next you would have to bleed the proportioning valve but that isnt always necessary.

In all honesty that groove that gets worn in the Master Cylinder gets sharp and it can really destroy the cups in the M.C. to the point where you have to replace it.

Try bleeding them a bit more but just from my experience, a higher milage vehicle, Loss of all fluid in the reservoir and pressing the brake pedal to the floor has always meant new master cylinder. Ive owned more then 40 cars and its happened twice to me.

Good luck..

just make sure that you bleed the MC before you install it. It should come with adapters and short length of hose so that you can bench bleed it . its easier with one person to do it that way then trying to watch under the hood and pressing the brake pedal.

Bleed the brakes from back to front. Then bleed the mastercylinder. If that dont work then try cleaning the brakes really good.Fluid on the brakes can cause a similar reaction
