Default Bad Battery????

My 91 Cherokee runs great. But sometimes it seems like the battery is going dead when trying to start it. Only happened a few times. Gauge in the dash reads good charging. I took battery out and had it load tested, tested 12.79 volts.

Question is did they tell me the battery was good and maybe a cell is going bad? Or is the starter maybe going bad?

Thanks

Mike

clean all terminals and grounds, if problem persists pull the starter and take it in and get it checked.

Thanks, I should have added that I replaced all the terminals and cleaned the posts.

I'm not knowledgeable about batteries so can't tell you anything on that, did you have the starter tested? My original starter died slowly over the course of about a year and a half, the starter on my mom's Camry died less than a week later with no warning, her car must of had "new parts envy".

Have not tested starter yet, it seems to work real well but just those couple of times were it would crank slow like the battery was going dead and then fire.

I would start by cleaning all of the grounding points, not just the battery terminals.

12.79 is the static voltage reading of your battery without a load on it. Put a 200 amp load on the battery and see what the voltage drops to. Anything below 9.6 volts means the battery is junk. Fours years old and it's starting to act up? You better replace it now.
