Default Backwards Oil Pressure

When I hit the gas my oil pressure seems to drop and when I let off it jumps up. It's supposed to be the other way around from my understanding. Any idea on what's causing it to do this? Maybe the sending unit?

you can check the sending unit but i think its a single wire unit. no idea why yours is reading backwards though

These past few weeks its been acting up on me. The other day it just died on me randomly and when I tried to restart it wouldn't even bother to turn over. Then after about a minute or two it started back up. I thought I smelled oil but when I checked for leaks I couldn't find anything. Not sure what's going on with it. Can't complain to much though its got 205,000 miles on it and this is really the first time its giving me any issues.

one of my XJ's used to burn a lot of oil.. when the oil capacity got lower, the gauge would be fine at idle but pressure would drop under any load or turning a corner. that was my call to check the oil level and top it off.

Well the weird thing is that the pressure is high at idle. It sits around the 3/4 mark on the gauge. Sometimes it will have an issue starting up too, I don't know if the problems are related but it'll turn over and act like its going to fire up and then not, continue to turn over a bit more and then start but it sputters and barely stays running until I give it some gas. Then it idles high for a minute and drops down. I kind of assume the problems are related but I don't know for sure.

Hard starting was an issue in 2 of my jeeps.. after battling with the problem for so long, I found either the hose connected to the gas evap can had fallen off, or the hose itself was soft from being oil soaked or cracked and checked badly.. I was amazed to see the back up work truck come to life over a simple hose replacement. Not sure what It would have to do with the oil pressure situation, but would run rough, stall, not "catch" when starting and run like chopped hamburger with this not connected properly

+1 on oil level

Maybe oil pump can't keep up with demand of engine?

Thanks for your replies everyone, Ill take a look at my oil level when I get a chance and check the hoses. This all happened after my pully or tensioner deal locked up and broke the belt. Replaced it and the belt and thats when it all started. What could that have done to make it start doing that?

Justin,

I can't see how that would have an effect on what problems your having now.

That's what I was thinking but I didn't know for sure. I couldn't understand how that happening would cause it to do what it is doing now.

Ive had things happen and had to be replace things in my line of work, (not auto related) that was way out of the ordinary..

That's what makes places like this board important. Others run across very strange issues and try to pass on the strange with the common.. never hurts to get input from what others learn the uncommon/hard way

Wish you luck tracking down your XJ's demons

Hey everyone,

Think I found the problem. A cooling sensor was unplugged which I am assuming came unplugged when the belt broke. Seems to be working fine so far so hopefully that was it.

Default curious about the cooling sensor

Hey Justin,
I've been having high oil pressure problems. I replaced my oil pressure sending unit and next may be my pump. I recently changed my cerpentine belt and did a coolant flush so I'm not sure how any of that could cause my oil pressure to change but I'm going to check what the others have suggested and was wondering where and what cooling sensor you replaced. Also if anyone else has any ideas I really feel in the dark on this one??
