Default Backspacing Laws?

Does anyone know where to find backspacing laws or laws by state on how far the wheels can stick out of the wheel well? Cannot find this anywhere, but continue to hear horror stories about the subject.

best advice is to contact the your states highway patrol or even the local police they can tell you how much tire can extend beyond the flare or vehicle.

Tried that earlier but they don't list those regs on any DMV page I've seen. Most of the garbage deals with drivers liscense...insurance and other stuff like that. Never seen any laws like this posted.

You won't find any laws regarding backspacing. Backspacing in a Jeeper term and in the real world is called offset and measured differently. You will find lift laws and laws regarding tire exposure.

Nothing on tire exposure or offset. This is basically all I could find on the subject. http://liftlaws.com/index.htm

I'll give johny law a call next week to see if they even have any idea of what I'm talking about.

Got to fiddling around with your question and discovered this article, which points out that "Offset" and "Backspacing" are actually two different measurements.

I asked this question too. i live in NY My father inlaw is a retired NYC Highway 3 and i have a uncle who is a retired Souffolk county Highway officers. both of them busted my chops at a BBQ last year cause i didnt have fender flares wide enough to cover my tires. the both said as long as i had some kind of fender flares even with the surface of the tire i'd be good. dint know if this helps but atleast if you put fender flare extensions on you should be ok.

Yeah, that makes sense about the flares but I wish I could actually find something in writing that states exactly what is required. But unfortunately it is very vague when it comes to offset and backspacing requirements.
