Is there a sensor on the tranny or somewhere that picks up when you are in Reverse? I noticed the day I swapped my axles that I didn't have backup lights. Could it be that they are both spent and need replacing?

Well check the bulbs and connections first just to be sure. After that this thread might help you out. Just scroll down to Blue's replies. They deal with the NNS.

i would say if the light bulbs are ok than it is the neutral safety switch on the tranny. the copper contacts might be worn out and not touching. i had this happen on my cherokee and the contacts were actually broken in the case of the switch.

Be careful when you open the switch. If it is all together then it can often be rebuilt. re-greased with dielectric grease and re-used.

Just bolts on, as for getting it off, I had to work at mine for a little while to get it off of the shaft.

getting the switch off can be tricky. when i did it i used alot of PB Blaster to loosen it up. and it does just unbolt off, and slide it off the shaft.

I know my NSS is going. I sometimes have to go into Neutral to start. I'll check the bulbs, but if the NSS could have something to do with it, then I'm sure that's my issue. AAHHH. I suppose this is one of the lovely things of Jeepownership, being underneath it all the time. Thanks guys.

There are numerous write-ups on the internet.

Just do a Google search for "NSS rebuild"

I used to have a ton of links as reference but I cleaned house two months ago...they gone now
