Default Back in the game - 94 Sport!

Well, I've gone and done it again....

I just bought a 94 Sport today and will pick it up tomorrow. I bought it from the 2nd owner who had it for 5 years. She just replaced manifold, waterpump, cat, battery, gearbox fluids, etc...

She included the entire service history from day one as well as the window sticker!

Its a 94 Sport with 143k (ouch!) Its an auto and has the 242 tcase (I heard these arent as good, is this true) It has the chrysler 8.25 and tow package including tranny cooler, heavy duty radiator, etc... full gauges, and cupholders!

What it doesnt have (that is good in my opinion) is power windows, locks, and ABS.

The interior is immaculate, however the exterior has an oxidized left fender and a mismatched grill (prior accident that I pointed out) It was purchased brand new here in Oregon (no salt = minimal rust).

I spoke with the tech thats been working on it for 5 years and he advised that it was a good rig.

She was asking $3200 and I negotiated it down to $2300. I figured being a 2 owner and having the entire service history was worth a few extra bucks.

No pics yet but what do you guys think? Oh yea, its red.

My last jeep was a 94 Cherokee Sport. She was a cool jeep, the wife and I drove her everywhere. It was a basic rig, like yours. I bought her in Vancouver, Wa and she was totaled in Newport, Or.
Plan on doing any upgrades???

Sounds like a great score.I got a similar deal on my XJ. It's a 91 and I gave $2600 for it in 2005. It was stock as a stove and immaculate inside and out. The only bad thing was it had 185K miles on it and it REEKED of ciggy smoke inside but, the thing still runs like a top to this day and I got the STANK out of it. I think it was either towed a lot or it had a new motor put in it and I wasn't told. I just know you'll get as much fun out of your "new to you" XJ as I've gotten out of mine.

Yes the 242 is a great t-case. Alot better than the 231. You won't need a sye on a 3in lift or a 4.5 in lift. If you plan to wheel it is better to not have ABS.

Great deal.

I do agree it was a little pricey, but finding a 2 owner rig with all maint history isnt easy. (The last repair bill she had was for $950 in 07 for the maniflold, battery, gear boxes, tune up, etc doesnt include the previous water pump for $350) Plus, dead of winter is the worse time to but a 4x4. According to the window sticker the MSRP on this thing was $21k, talk about depreciation.

Aside from the color and T-case, its exactly what I wanted.

Yea, I plan to do some mods. Need to sell my Nissan truck first. My last jeep had a combonation of Rustys, RE, and Warrior for a total of 5.5"s of lift. Had JKS discos, confer rack, hacked fenders, 33" muds, etc... definately not a DD.

This one I am planning to keep subtle and low cost. I am looking into a 3" lift. I know a lot of folks bag on Rustys, but I never had any issues with there stuff and I bought a used kit. I also really like the 3.5" RE lift, however a lot more money than Rustys but is a lot more complete. I am thinking of some 31" all terrain, possible the General Grabber AT2's as they are a lot cheaper.

Other than that, probably leave it alone. Dont want to blow too much money on a 145k rig.

Any other thoughts on a budget lift? I installed the 3" Rustys in my bro-in-laws 97 and it seemed okay. I do like the fact that the RE one comes w/ LCA's.

Why don't you like the 242 T-case. All my understanding from reading here and NAXJA says it is a better t-case just with not at much aftermarket support.

I love my 242. It kinda seems a bit more temperamental than a 231, but works wonderfully.

242 is definitely better as far as snow driving and other weather conditions due to the FT capability.
91 Laredo, tell you what come down here to so cal and we can swap t-cases.

This is part of the reason, I remember years ago hearing that people would rather have the 231. I was also reading on NAXJA that the 231 is a little more stoute than the 242.

However I could be completely wrong. The 231 is less complex therefore less to go wrong. But for what mine is to be used for I am sure it will be okay.

Anyway, I didnt get any responses in lift opinions. Rustys is so damn cheap plus it comes with shocks , I only plan to run 31's and wont get inchitis (been there and done that). This rig needs to be completely streetable and get good mileage.

Ok, I got a 231 in my '98, and a 242 in my '92... I actually love them both...
If you want to know about strength, then here, I made an addition to my transfer case thread..

I had the rusty's 3" on mine for about 2 yrs and never had a problem. I am now running Rusty's springs at 4.5 in front and 3.5 in rear with a 1.5 shackle and a mix of other stuff and still no problems. It all depends on the money you want to spend IMHO.

Are LCA's necessary with that much lift? It would be nice to have them for new busings, etc..

There are a few things the kit doesnt come w/ that would seem to be important: track bar relocation bracket, brake line drop brackets, rear brake line extension, and sway bar drop brackets or extensions. Are these items not necessary for this small of a lift?

Also, it says I can fit 31's. Can this be done w/o any trimming and no rubbing?

Thanks.

At 3", you're going to rub on the LCA's at full lock with 31's. Other that, no additional rubbing unless you disconnect the front sway bar and flex it out. I'm somewhere around 4" of lift and mine rubs with the front sway bar off when I flex it out.

And I'd keep that 242.....despite what many say, they can take just as much abuse as a 231. I wouldn't trade my 242 for anything!
