Axles strong enough
Hey guys
I am planning on putting lockers in front and back. I am running 31s.
I was wondering if I should upgrade the axles or if you guys think the stock ones will be strong enough? If I do upgrade it will only be alloy axles, or are they not need.

You should be fine with 31s. Any bigger on the tires or if you plan on doing some crazy airborne or lots of skinny pedal stuff you'd better go ahead and upgrade the axles.

i would not even bother putting a hard locker in a dana 35...it is just a waste of time. also what gear ratio are you going to run?

you should be fine on 31's if you dont drive like a maniac. i had an 01 with the d35 on 31's for awhile, never broke and i wasnt very easy on it. for going over 31's you may want to think about swapping out that rear axle if you want to do some harder offroading. the dana 35 wont survive long when you beat on it. i'd say start out with a front auto locker (or whatever you are getting), and wait and see how you like it.

i agree with 01Limited...a front locker will be utilized more offroad then your rear. i also ran an open diff dana 35 on 31s an never broke it. i also beat the crap out of it. so no locker and 31s...u should be safe. any type of locker or bigger tires and your dana 35 will say F U and commit suicide!

I believe they are the stock gears 3.55. When I bought the jeep it had 30s on it. So I do not know if the previous owner changed the ratio or not. The speedo was correct so either they did change the gears or the speedo gear.
I am thinking of staying with that or possible going with 3.73

3.73 is such a small jump its not really worth it. for 31's, if you ARE doing gears...go 410. if you think you may go higher later, go 4.56. BUT...i'd change the rear axle first. ford 8.8 from a junk yard wouldnt be to hard to throw in, and a lot of them come in 4.10 gears. then you'd only have to regear the front.
