I have a 1998 jeep cherokee se 4.0l 5 speed. I have a few questions. I just sold a grand cherokee wj for this and im wanting to know exactly what i have in the cherokee. 1/ Is the transmission the ax-15? 2/ Is the rear axle the chrysler 8.25? 3/ Are the gears 4.10? 4/ Is the 4.0l the high output? As far as i know everything is stock from the factory and i notice jeep changed alot of the stuff on the cherokee from year to year so i havent been able to find out much. What i mentioned is what i think is in it but im not for sure. Anyone know for sure just by the year and model SE?
The axle you should be able to identify by comparing the to sticky thread at the top of this section. The gear ratio should be located by looking at the pumpkin cover itself. There should be a metal tab connected between two of the cover bolts that lists the ratio. It may be rusty, and hard to see at first. I don't have any info about what trans you have.
For the rear axle look at the sticky. In short, if you have a straight flange on the bottom for no apparent reason you have a 8.25. Usually they came on non-ABS vehicles those years.
if you have ABS then you have d35
if no ABS then you have chrys 8.25 given your year, it will have 27 spline axle shafts
diff covers look similar, but the 8.25 will have a flat bottom on the axle housing
8.25 on left / d35 on right. notice the flat bottom on the 8.25
If I might make one correction to the above all 97 up Chy 8.25's had the 29 spline axles in them and your engine is the HO. I think that covers all your questions.
Its a good ides to fill out your user CP details making it easier for others to help you when you have a question.
