Default axle swap to get rid of vacum pump

Hi guys im new here and I just bought a 90 xj and of course the vacum pump for the four wheel drive does not work is there a way to get rid of it for some thing dependable with out changing the entire axle houseing. I also read some where that you could change the pasenger side axle to fix the problem but they did not list ant thing other than that so any info would be great thanks.

I had the same problem on mine. I bought a posi loc cable that you can find on ebay or somewhere that gets rid of the vac motor and is cable operated. When you put the tcase in 4wd just pull on the cable to engage the front axel. They also make a deal that somehow permently(?) connects the axel shafts together so needing the motor isnt necesary. I have also seen the 1 piece axel that you are talking about. Its really a matter of what you are going to do with your jeep.

You can replace the passenger side shaft with a shaft from ANY XJ, TJ, ZJ or MJ that has a none disconnect axle.

Than you make a steel cover for where the vacuum motor was and seal it with RTV. That simple and cheep..

I did the homebrew cable locker on my 91 XJ like Dougy Fresh was showing. It really worked well for me. I really recommend just going with a 1 piece solid long side axle shaft out of a 95+ XJ. That completely does away with the need for the disco of any kind and it gives you a bigger stronger knuckle U-joint. I even have a locker in the front of my XJ and it's really pretty smooth on the road when in 2HI. With a stock open diff. I'm sure it would be even more smooth. With that axle in place you merely shift the lever into 4LO or 4HI and away you go.

Wow you guys are awsome thanks for all the ideas. I have a pull apart here close to me what all do I need to get to swap the axle out off the salvage jeep?

yeah, that vacuum-disconect was used until 1991 i believe. replacing with a axle shaft from a '92 or later passenger side with a block-off plate will eliminate the problem. Warn makes a kit that basically is two seals and a plate that replaces all the extra stuff hanging off the axle.

you could also just go to the JY and get a complete axle with no vacuum disco, just make sure its the same gear ratios. and youll probably be able to pick it up wayyyy cheaper then the $200 cable option.

I ended up making a spacer and moving the "lock collar" so that it was perminant. Seeing how there still a open diff up front.
