Default axle swap

I am building my 94 xj and needed to see what axles i can swap out for my stock ones...I can buy some 3/4 chevy axles from a 78 truck but was told it wouldnt work...So i am just wondering what i can do to help out in getting some better axles under my xj while still not costing me an arm and leg..any ideas?? thanks

Working and not working has more to do with the amount of labor and $$ required than the actaul donor. If you want to do the modding you can usde the axle off a Kenworth If you wanted.

I'm running a 44 and 60 from a 79 F250 and like them but wish I had used a 60 in the front but they run around 1200 bucks here. It all depends on how much work you want to do. Unless you want to swap the t-case and redo your exhaust, you need a driver drop front axle. Ford up to 79 will work and they come in Dana 44 and 60 flavors and late models are Dana 50 and 60 but most tend to stay away from those, not sure why. Dodge late models use a driver drop 44 and 60 but have a unit bearing like your 30 and some have the CAD so not really worth the time unless they are cheap. For the rear it really doesn't matter I would just stay away from c-clips. Dana 44s, 60s, 70, 14 Bolts and 9" Fords are all common and easy and fairly cheap to find. Decide on a front and then just match bolt patterns with the rear and strength as well. Good luck and happy fabbing.

Those links posted about the axles are insane! Such great detail and opinion. Just from reading it I can tell the author is no doh doh.
I'm extremely intimidated by axles right now. But i know I need to learn about them more. I have no clue how to weld either.
I'd like to eventually run 35" tires but my stock 8.25 and dana 30 will squill like a pig.
I was even thinking of just upgrading my existing axles with stronger chromoly aftermarket stuff. But that still doesn't seem like a long term fix.
I'm not rock climbing slick rock and what not. But I'm building to make it a all around generally good wheeler.

The 8.25 and D30 will hold up to 35's just fine, especially if you're not wheeling them hard in the rocks.
