Default Axle Nut Cotter Pin Size

Just wondering what size people use? Needed to replace after replacing the wheel bearings, in the write-up I found (http://jeep.off-road.com/jeep/articl....jsp?id=257794) it says to use 2" x 3/16" but when I tried that size it was too big and I couldn't get it to go in. I tried a 1 1/2" x 1/8" but it seemed too small.

The FSM doesn't specify a size.

When I did mine I just took the old one with me to Lowes and found a package of the same size.

Sorry that does not help much. I will check in a min, I think I have the extra one in the glove box.

Thanks, I destroyed the old ones getting them off or I would have tried that.

I use a piece of annealed tie wire rather than cotter pins. The roll of wire is pretty cheap and is in the trail kit to start with.

Checked I did not have it. But I like the wire idea.

It really doesn't matter as long as it fits and doesn't slip out. The nuts shouldn't get that loose anyway.

Thanks for the responses. I'll probably look into the wire idea.

Default Axle nut cotter pin.

I have always used stainless steel 1/8” for the axle nuts. You could probably fit 3/16” but I don’t like to fight with them getting them in and out. You can get a pack of them at autozone for around 2 bucks.
