AX15 Transmission
How long does the AX15 usually last (mileage wise) under normal circumstances? I'm looking at buying a '94 Jeep Cherokee with 150,000 miles on it. The guy said he's never replaced the transmission, although he is the 2nd owner. I test drove it and it still shifts smooth and such. Feels fine. Just want to make sure it ain't gonna drop out on me a couple months down the road.

Don't think I've heard of any problems with the AX15, they're a damn good trans.

My Jeep has 285K on the clock. I barely started having some problems with the synchronizers on 1st and 4th. BUT it was my fault, I had a leak and the trans was running almost empty for 3 weeks, but that was 30K ago, and its still running strong, just have to shift a little differently.
I am currently saving money for the trans

My AX15 has 200,000 on it and I got the Jeep about 3 months ago and have been putting it through the tests since I got it...ya know, burnouts, clutch-kicks, powershifts. It's a good trans. I'll be doing a fluid change in a week or so, I plan on using Syncrhomesh, but the Mopar recommended fluid is regular old 10W30 motor oil. I'm sure it will last a long, long time.

i have a 95 with 170k the syncros are worn out on it pretty bad. I think it was from the previous owner being a woman. Other than that its a great truck. Ive had it for 3 months now and have put about 3k on it.

Oh, really? See for yourself. I kid you not.

Personally, I don't think it would last nearly as long as a gear oil such as Synchromesh or Redline MT90, but is nearly the same viscosity. I did a lot of googling when I heard this was what is recommended.

It the same viscosity as 75w-90 supposedly. Mopar has been constantly changing their specs for the correct fluid, but some people said they had no problems using motor oil. I can see using motor oil because it does hold up to constant heat and compression and what not. The shear rate just seems lower compared to a gear oil. I would rather just spend the extra $20 on Synchromesh instead of hundreds on a new tranny if it doesn't hold up.

I got my jeep with 145000 on it and 1st and 2nd synchros are pretty shot, but still driveable. Don't know what kind of abuse (if any) it saw before i got it. everything else is well maintained and clean so i am guessing the po took pretty good care. Strength wise the AX-15 is pretty much bullet proof and rebuild kits are cheap and plentifull.
