AX-5 cold start whine
Went and looked at a 99 cherokee with the 2.5l and ax-5 transmission. When I started it up, the transmission gave off a small whine in neutral and part of 1st as I got out onto the road. After shifting into second the noise went away. The whine almost sounded like backing up in reverse. It shifted fine, and all the gears were there. I even tried to get the transmission to do it again but to no luck. I'm looking at driving this for maybe a year or so and doing a complete swap over to a 4.0 and ax-15, but for the time being I'd rather not be buying another transmission. Any help?

When was your last fluid change? The reverse gear is cut differently from the others btw.
You should be running something synchromesh-friendly like the Pennzoil or Castrol-branded stuff or fancier Redline MT-90.

I'm not sure of the last fluid change, I'll talk to the guy and find out.
I'm fairly acquainted with the reverse whine lol. My first jeep was a 96 with the ax-5 and when I heard the reverse whine for the first time it scared me half to death. Thought for sure I had broken something.
I've never heard a throwout bearing whine like this. The odd part was it went away after driving it. I parked it, left it running and stuck my head underneath to see if I could hear it again and nothing. Turned it off, turned it back on and still no sound.

Mine did the same for a little while. It was (is) the throwout bearing. Mine made quite a few different noises before it finally shut up.
Edit: Now that i think about it, have you checked the idler pulleys? Mine made a few different wining noises while it was going out.

Salad@: If I buy the vehicle, I will be changing it regardless lol. It's nice to be able to keep track of which fluid needs changed.
XJ@: Okay, that's not too bad then. Have you dropped the transmission before? I haven't checked the pulleys yet, but I am planning on going out for a second look because I forgot to check the 4x4
