Currently:

I run 75w90 RP in my AX-15. I have had no problems and have been running it for roughly 10k miles, but after reading this and other threads, I think I will change it to 10w-30, or Amsoil gear oil. I run RP 10w-30 in my engine, no problems. Currently, I average city/highway about 20mpg or better. Oh, and to clear any confusion, I have a 1996 Cherokee with a 4.0L HO, AX15 and an NP 231.

Im currently REbuilding my AX-15 out of my 96 which had 248,??? miles on it when I pulled it. I plan on using either a 10w-30, 10w-40 or 15w-40 weight motor oil when its back together versus a 75w-90 or 80w-90 weight gear oil. Ive used 75w-90 for lower mile AX-15s and 80w-90 weight for higher mileage AX-15s, but im going to go with the new way of thinking and go with Chryslers New recommendation of 10w-30or40 motor oil(They recommend 10w-40 Synthetic to be exact) for 97thru99 AX-15s.

I was thinking about doing the same thing with my AX-15. I'm not wild about using RP 75w-90 which is GL4/5. I would rather put something in it that is safer for soft yellow. I've had no problems, but it's still in the back of my mind.

Stop thinking about this.

AMSOIL!!!!

75W-90 GL-4

it's the best stuff you can get for a Japanese/Import (yes the AX-15 is Japanese) transmissions that require a GL-4 specific 90W. Don't reinvent the wheel. It is what's specified and Amsoil has the reputation to support. I ran this is my 1962 Unimog, 97' Jeep, 91' Miata, and 430hp 96' 240sx.... This stuff works GREAT!

the 231 does flawlessely with Amsoil ATF.

and, no, I don't work for Amsoil. I've just used their oils for years

That's the debate in my head. Amsoil 75w-90 or 10w-40. There's a lot of support on both sides of that debate, but my research leans toward the Amsoil, from an engineering and technical standpoint.

^ Chrysler specifies a GL-4 90w... I wouldn't reinvent the wheel on this one.

where?

the AX-15 factory repair manual I have says
"Recommended lubricant for AX-15 transmissions is Mopar 75W-90, API Grade GL--5 gear lubricant, or equivalent."

But I dont take that to be worth very much, since this is not a Mopar designed trans.

especially since they changed the spec ~1996, yet the part numbers for the internals stayed basically the same (most importantly the synchros)

I use redline in my Ba10, and I will use it in my AX-15 when the frenchy quits!
http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=46&pcid=7
Safe for brass synchros, as it lacks the reactive sulfurs found in most GL-5 oils that cause damage

All of this is good information and Amsoil is a good product if you can get it easily. I figured it'd be time for an update on how the Royal Purple 10W-40 is doing in my transmission. As I said a few months ago my shift's are smoother and Reverse ingages just as easy as It did when I put it into gear. I also had an odd squeek noise (most likely from my slave cylinder) when I pushed the clutch pedal in. It still has not returned and my shifts are still smooth and the rough 1-2 shift seems to be alittle more cushoned now I'm running the RP. Just thought I'd post an update for anyone who is interested.
