Possibly the nuetral safety switch then? When my Jeep doesn't start because off the bad/dirty nss everytime I hit the key everything stops using power and attempts to start with no starter noise. I wiggle the shifter in nuetral and it starts right up. Not sure if that help, may have a different problem but its worth a try.
The nuetral saftey switch is located on the passenger side of the trnamission. If you find out that's your problem there are a bunch of write ups on here to guide you through the cleaning and repair process.

I do not have a picture, on the passenger side of the transmission you will see a set of wires going into a sensor. That sensor has a nut in the center holding it on i believe.
Unless you verify that is your problem I'd say continue troubleshooting. The sensors are fragile and expensive if broken. I suggest reading some of the write ups before getting into cleaning the sensor.
That sensor is what gives the starter the ok to start cranking.

Like I said move the shifter if its an automatice back and forth through the gears. If mine starts to act up ill usually put it in nuetral and slightly put some pressure on it like I'm trying to go in "D" and it will start cranking again. Its a common problem with the xj. Google for more info or write ups. You will also be able to find a picture of it.

I just dont understand how I change the alternator and now it wont start I drove it off the trailer parked it in the drive way then had to push it into the garage and now it won't start it turns over now which it wouldn't be for but thats only bc I bypassed the neutral safety switch. I also broke the stupid thing
