I re-read your first post. Hanging and revving freely between gears is definitely not normal. Hunting around a shift point can and does happen under light throttle under certain conditions.
we shall see. typically a mechanically failing auto trans will be evident by crud in the fluid. this seems like some kind of info input issue. the tv cable did rest in a place roughly 1/4" farther toward the driver's side after adjustment, maybe it was just enough to cause a problem. i'll be driving it soon and will update.

Agreed. Normal hunting doesn't result in it revving as if it's in neutral.

There's a road I drive every day where my trans will hunt between 3 & 4, just because of the speed and terrain (up & down, few level spots). I just drop it into 3rd for that stretch. Problem solved.

s346k, have you tried manually dropping into 3rd to see what happens? Might be a useful bit of info.

Mine hunts between 3rd and overdrive when i hit 70kms it is kinda anyoing when it
Jumps between the 2. I think it's perfectly normal. What I do if I'm cruising around the speed where over drive kicks in is turn on my trans power switch which raises the shift points...... On the highway I leave it be on comfort.

One more time, folks. This is not normal hunting!

if I put it in 3rd it won't happen. the hanging between gears occurs when I am barely touching the gas. if I let off or push the gas harder it will choose a gear and go. I will most likely end up replacing the solonoids, all of them, as preventative maintenance. I'll update after I do that.

update:

I took another look at the tv cable. I compared it to a friends xj. mine was way out of whack. I pressed the button to release it, but I had to force it to move. after railing it back and forth a few times to free it up I adjusted via the throttle body and all is well now. it really softened up the shifts (they were quite rigid beforehand) and it also stopped the indecisive shifting issue.

Really glad to hear that had been watching your thread and the best part, repair was "Free".

I was going to suggest to the group that for XJ's that are as old as ours are a must have around the shop are 2 items. One is a good spray can of electrical contact cleaner and a computer connector pin straightener. Another item I use a lot of are pencils not for writing but for the erasers on them, excellent for cleaning contact points on some lights etc.
