a u joint bent my factory shifter cable. so i replaced it, first time the cable melted, the second time install went fine. but the problem is now my gears are messed up. park is still park, reverse is still reverse, and the "groove" of neutral and drive is what seems to be messed up. neutral is reverse also and drive is neutral. 3rd seems to be drive, it shifts at high rpm's and there seems to be a lack of power at certain ranges. 1-2 seems to be 3rd, as i don't seem to have as much of the loss of power and it doesn't erratically shift into overdrive(4th gear) on the highway.

now i asked a guy at napa. and he gave me a solution that seemed possible. that i had to twist the cable to get it to fit into the grove, which may have shortened the "throw" of the cable. is this a good idea?

if its not the cable at all, what could it be? if its the trans its self does it sound like a expensive repair?
