What years did this tranny come in cherokees?

 

* TF904/TF909 - 3 speed auto - used '84-'86 with 2.5L I-4 and 2.8L V6 engines (909 is 904 w/ lock up converter)
* TF999 - Auto trans used in '91 with 2.5L engine.
* 30RH - 3 speed automatic - used with 2.5L I-4 engine '94?-'00
* AW4 - 4 speed automatic with lockup torque converter, electronically controlled - manufactured by Aisin-Warner - used from '87-'01 ('87-'91 models include a Power/Comfort switch that adjusts the shift points and the torque converter lockup)

IIRC the power comfort switch in the earlier XJs would accept later trannies b/c it was an electrical control through the TCU. The bolt patterns were idenical too but the torque converters were not so you needed to keep them together as a unit or change the flex plate too. The spline count on the transfer case out puts also changed so I'm unsure if the transfer case from later models worked in earlier models and viceversa.

older (87-90)have 21 spline output, newer(91-01) have 23 spline. in 98 a output speed sensor was added making them not compatable with earlier computer systems
