Aw4 torque converter not locking
Hey guys! I'm new to the forum but I've got a couple questions. 1989 xj 4.0 aw4 np242 185,xxx so I've owned this thing for about 9 months ran great no issues just recently went muddng and now my tc lock does not function at all. It used to lock out 3 and od very predictably but then it just quit working all together no intermittent just not locking at all. I've adjusted the kick down cable and removed and tested/ cleaned the upper brake switch and cleaned the connector plugs and still nothing. The day it occurred I messed with the switch and got it to lock for about 20 mins then hit a big bump and it unlocked and hasn't worked since. Any suggestions? I'm too poor for this terrible mpg

Update
A little update on the situation with my xj today I was shifting it by hand with the tcu still plugged in I put it in 1-2 and it didn't stay in first I got up to about 10 mph and it threw it in 2nd no high revving or anything but it didn't go past second until I moved the shifter to 3rd still have all 4 gears and shift smoothly still no tc lock up and my power comfort switch seems shorted along with no reverse lights now. Could the nss be causing all this trouble? Also I will be wiring a jumper to the power comfort switch this weekend thanks guys!

First off, check the "trans" fuse in your fusebox under the dash.
Secondly, eliminate the Power/Comfort switch like this:
Bypassing the Power/Comfort Switch on a Renix Jeep
Remove and unplug the switch. In the harness are 3 wires One has a stripe, one is tan, and the other black. Make a 4" jumper wire with a male spade at each end. Plug one end in the cavity for the tan wire and the other in the cavity for the striped wire and you'll be in permanent Power mode. Stuff the harness back in and reinstall the switch for looks.

Oops. Thirdly, check the adjustment of this switch on the brake pedal.

So the trans fuse is good I bypassed the comfort power switch and adjusted the tcc switch to no avail. I plugged my dmm into the plug for the tcc switch and took it out for a cruise, never got any voltage readings on my meter even after hitting highway speeds. Should I get voltage at this plug that attaches to the tcc switch? If so how much?

Do this. Use the Ohms scale and hook a probe up to each of the TCC switch terminals.
Depress the pedal and then release the pedal. What does the meter say?

Cruiser is probably at his "other" Church . I'm pretty green on that auto trans. There is a diagram for the solenoids in my signature if that helps. Me thinks the TPS is not a player for lockup, But Idk. Yours is checkable/adjustable, see Cruisers link for the procedure. Something to check anyway.
Whoops! I'll find that and post it.
