Even wondering for a while if there is a way for the aw4 to hold 4th gear better? Basically once you hit 45 it drops to overdrive. With the slightest lift if the gas pedal it drops down a gear then goes right back to overdrive. Wondering if there is a kit that helps with holding that fourth gear better? Anyone have any experience with something like this or am I thinking the impossible? Thanks

That's exactly why I hate 40mph speed limits. Jeep likes below 40 or 45+ lol.

I always though the shift kits just gave better, quicker shifts but I don't know a whole lot about transmissions. I do know there's an option for a rail shifter kit. RAD designs or something like that. Then you'd tell it what gear to be in.

You mean it's going from 4th, which is overdrive, to locking up the torque converter, right?

Not sure whats out there for jeeps but you might be interested in a ratchet shifter with a manual valve body. My uncles General Lee has a three speed ratchet shift you just click it 1-2-3 and cruise or swing it back into 1 and light the tires up I never really noticed they way the trans shifts but then again I have the giant gas gauge and idiot lights and no tach on my 96 lol.

Not really cruising down the road and you hit overdrive right at 45. If you take your foot slightly off the gas like your coming up too quick on someone it drops back to third. Then if you slightly press again it goes back to overdrive. Same thing if your cruising the highway can be going 70 and it does the same thing. I'm pretty positive it's not a problem since every one I've ever driven and the three at home right now all do the exact same thing. Just wondering if there is something out there that can help hold 4th better. My past is mostly with 4l60e's and 700r's and there are kits for these that help lock it in fourth harder so it doesn't want to come in and out so much

I think you're experiencing the locking and unlocking of the torque converter.

Try this. When it's in the "overdrive" as you call it, maintain everything the way it is and lightly apply the brake pedal with your left foot.

Mine locks the tourque converter before 40mph. I would say that if I'm on a flat grade road at 30-35mph it will lock the converter. I think he's talking about going from 4th and it downshifting to 3rd on a grade. Unless the tourque converter unlocks on uphill grades then I'm wrong lol

I know what you mean by "manually" locking and unlocking of the torque converter. It works correctly. Slight raise in rpm when it unlocks for sure. Hell everything works correctly for once! just trying to see if there are modifications to the aw4. Diesel hit the nail on the head.

It will downshift to third on flat land. Just go for a drive in yours and you should see what in talking about. You can't feel it shift to third but when you put your foot back on the gas it will very quickly go back to fourth.

The older XJs (my 89) have a Power or Comfort button for the transmission that does exactly what you're asking. It works pretty well. Maybe it can be adapted to newer models.
