Hey guys,
I’m conflicted on what to do with my tranny out of my 96’ XJ. I have an AW4 tranny / 231J TC that probably has 200k miles on it. I’m rebuilding my entire XJ, got a stroker job done on my 4.0 so I figured to rebuild the AW4 since everything is gonna be redone. Everything was running decent before I stripped it for the rebuild. I don’t think the trans was running good, just ok. Is it worth it to look for a rebuild job on it? I have a decent budget, not looking to spend 3k getting it rebuilt though. I just don’t want to get back under it in a year or two if it ends up going out. Curious to hear your thoughts.

I would only get it done by a quality trans shop that knows what they are doing with AW4.
I would ask them directly how many they had rebuilt
A quality rebuild would probably run to $3kUS or more, especially if it includes R&R (most quality shops insist, so throw in another 1k)
That would include replacing such things as brass bush shells, all, consumable parts, and is called a "remanafacture"
There is a good Youtube channel on auto trans rebuilds, older US guy, fixes everyone else ****ups, very educational
They may have some upgraded parts available for AW4, as they also were in Supra and other vehicles with twin turbo 300HP+

Old gearhead/ professional machinist here. If you haven't rebuilt any transmissions in your life this is not the first one you want to attempt. Multiple clutch packs, a million parts that are all necessary to reinstall. Read the manual before diving in. Good luck my friend.
