AW4 Questions
Just needing to know if any year AW4 transmission will work in a 97? I have a 4 wheel dr AW4 w/ NP231 Transfer case out of a 90 XJ wanting to put it in a 97 that currently has a AW4 2 Wheel drive.
Any help greatly appreciated

The spline count is not the same, count them the 90 should be 21 and the 97 output shaft should be 23. But you can change the input on the xfercase.I mis read your first post, you want to use the 90 aw4 from a 4 wheel drive in the 2 wheel drive 97? if so you would have to change the tail shaft on the 90 for a 2 wheel drive. It will bolt up,but I am not sure about the trany controls

The 90 (OBD1) TCU cannot talk to the 97 (OBD2) PCM so you'll have to swap out the appropriate sensors, re-wire the harness, and install a 97 TCU.
Without communication between the TCU and PCM your tranny will not shift.

This is crazy. YOU DON'T NEED ANOTHER FREAKIN AW4 TRANNY, you have one under your 2wd. What you need is just another TC with the 23 splines ('96-on) and the 4wd tail adapter out of the '90 AW4 you have spare. Like i said, you might have to keep the '97 speed sensor that is seated in that extention, or just rewire the connector.

If you want to keep the AX15 (manual) same story as above, you need the 4wd adapter (tail) out of an up to '96 AX15 with 4wd.
If you want to switch to the AW4 (auto) should be a direct swap with the whole drive train ( i mean everything, flexplate, tranny, TC, drive shafts and gears, pedals, shifters, TPS and harness, etc) out of the '91.

True, the OP doesn't have to swap in a new 4x4 tranny, but with plethora of Cash for Clunker XJ's in the jy's now he does have a wide variety to choose from. He might be more inclined to simply remove the tranny he currently has and simply slip in a complete tranny and transfercase from a donor 97 4wd XJ.
