In first you have to take it to 2900rpm let off then it shifts...sometimes. Other times it's fine. It's a 92 with 172k please help

I'm having the exact same problem with my 90 xj. I've adjusted the kickdwn per instructions on here and have also replaced and adjusted the TPS again per instructions. Doing those two things has made a vast improvement but not entirely solved the problem. Just as you say, the problem is somewhat intermittent. I'm hoping the problem can be solved without a transmission rebuild but I don't know what else to try. Any additional ideas are greatly appreciated.

The AW4 is designed to shift into second gear at 3000 RPMs when the shifter is in 1-2 position.

If the tranny shifts into second at 2900 RPMs when the shifter is in D, then there is a problem.

....unless your foot is pressed against the pedal a little harder than normal

OP, does it not want to shift even if you're only pressing the gas just a little bit? If so, then there's a problem as stated by frantic. If it isn't shifting til 2900 rpm when your foot is pressed, then that's just normal.

shift solenoids, there are two of them. both are different, but about 29 bux each and easy to replace.
they are located under the trans pan, so you will need a new gasket and tranny fluid also.

My fluid is fine doesn't smell burnt I found a chart a while back on how to test if the solenoids are bad from where the tcm plugs in but I can't find it...and it doesn't matter how hard I push on the gas when it happens its the same every time
