aw4 problem
I went and pulled a aw4 trans from a junkyard out of a 98 cherokee sport. I put it in a 93 wrangler it went in easy. But I am having 2 problems now.
#1- I started the motor and there is a ticking noise coming from the bell housing.
#2- I have no gears reverse or forward and no trans fluid pressure in the cooling lines.
I bought a shifter from Radesigns to manually shift it so I didn't wire the tcu in. Does this need to be wired far it to have pressure or gears even.. I understood that I didn't have to have the tcu unless I wanted it to automatically shift itself.

#2 suggests torque converter is not seated properly or the oil pump in the torque converter is blown
Combination of the two, I would guess the flexplate and torque converter are not mated properly

I jus got thru cleaning the convertor bolts holes and rebolted it.. still making the noise. Is the convertor supposed to rattle when out the trans? The noise is like a loud clicking not a knock. It's like nothing I've ever heard.

The convertor should not rattle.
Does your original convertor rattle? If not swap it in.
Do you have flow thru the lines to the trans cooler? If not definately a no pump problem.
Flow should be significant with a good pump.

If the converter is bad Will that make the trans not have pressure in the lines? I guess wat I'm asking is the pump in the converter or if the convertor is bad will the pump not be turned?

Pump is right behind the converter. Google it up for a view. For price of a pump, you could get another J yard trany for less.
Do you have the orginal converter?

Oh, sorry.
The trans pump is that webbed casting behind the converter.
Will the junkyard swap for another? Could always ask.
I've had flexplate rattles, loose bolt, and sometimes the flexplate will crack. I expect you've already checked the bolts are tight.
If you just slightly loosen one of the trans fluid lines, not too much spillage, is there pressure there?
Damn shame about your labour time.

There is no pressure. And I done tightened them twice and cleaned the holes out wit brake cleaner. I'm starting to think that's y it was at the junkyard. If the pump is bad the trans won't do anything will it. The only thing the trans will do is lock in park.

I imagine the fluid level is up. Sometimes a cavitating hydraulic will sound like rattle. Check the fluid level is up.
It's not turning out well.
However, I'm sure we are over my head with the trans knowledge.
I know there are much much more knowledgeable on the forum.
Don't spend on new convertor and pump. If you had another used I'd try it but your right, could be the reason it was at the yard. Don't spend more.
Will the yard swap u for another? Had a yard here trade a bad ford trans back once. Doesn't recover your time but that is a drawback with yard stuff.
