The forum search isn't working on the app, and I need some advice on fluid. I need to change it,and I know to do it slowly a pan change at a time. But what type of fluid is compatible with the DexIII now?

What's your question? The AW4 takes Dexron III/Mercon. You should be able to get it at any auto-parts store, brand doesn't really matter, I'd probably stick with "name-brands" if you can since there usually isn't much of a price diference but if all they have is the "house-brand" that is ok.

Castrol still makes Dex/Merc fluid that is Dexron III compatible:

Advance Auto parts and NAPA both still sell house brands of Dexron III (I think Wal-Mart does too):

http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...200_0006411566

Just check the bottle and make sure it is Dexron III compatible.

I think Dexron VI is supposed to be backward compatible with all earlier Dexron, but I'm not sure if anyone has decided to be the guinea pig and test this theory on the AW4 yet.

GM no longer licenses Dex III, so now it will be labeled something like "D/M" or similar. I agree with the poster who said to use a name-brand: since it is no longer officially licensed, there technically aren't any specs to adhere to. By sticking to a name brand, you can be pretty sure they wouldn't put their name on a sub-par product.

I have heard good things about Maxlife ATF. Personally, I put NAPA ATF in mine, and it worked well.

Valvoline makes a conventional ATF that is DexIII/Merc compatible.

I have used their MaxLife for about six years now with good results. Note that it is a full synthetic which some feel is potentially harmful for the AW4.

Dexron IV was the last compatible with the AW4. New stuff is just too thin and slippery for it. Same problem with Chrysler ATF+4

That's what I've heard, and afraid of.

I called early this morning and found some Castrol and Valvoline. One single gallon of Castrol transmax and several Valvoline. Any recommendations? It seems the Castol is an older formulation that might be better for my probably gummed up trans.

Bunch of folks here use both. Get the Valvoline, then you avoid mixing brands.

Penzoil still makes a Dex/Merc ATF. I have a few gallons of it that I picked up about 6 months ago.

If you are a sam's member you could just order some.

I've used valvolines dexIII/merc since the day I got the jeep. I have probably flushed out all the old fluid by now but I haven't had any ill effects using valvoline. Just don't use atf, I've heard that doesn't do good inside there. Always use something dexIII/merc

I've always used the advance auto brand ATF. in t56 cars 4l60 cars aw4 whatever. th350 as well. I think the main thing is keeping good fluid in the trans. kinda like changing the oil. as long as it's done in a timely manner it will be fine.
