Odd title but I am having trouble deciding on this. I just bought a 2001 XJ, haven't had an auto in a while so I forgot the fluid should be pink when looking at the level. I put some fluid on a coffee filter and it's a light brown, didn't smell burnt as far as I could tell. The Jeep has 156k mi on it. I was going to do the partial drain/fill a few times with Dex 3, but then I remember the Jeep was serviced at a dealership by the PO. I don't have a record of the fluid being changed but if it was by a dealership i'm thinking it might be ATF 4. Would it be bad to drain/fill with Dex 3? Should I take it somewhere and have it flushed with one or the other?

 

If you know what dealership it got done at just find out what they used to do it, then make sure you use the same type, or find out if they are compatiable, if you decide to change type's.
