I believe you can install a switch setup for the shifting.
The ax-15 can handle a decent amount of power, they were behind dakota's with V8s for a while.
But, overall there is no comparison between an auto and a manual. Personal preference.

You're really comparing apples and oranges here. It's like asking what tranny was better between the M-22 (Rock Crusher) 4-speed and the TH-400. The 2 trannys you want compared are the best Manual and the best Automatic offered in the XJ.
theyre good as long as you keep fluid in them. look up awshifting.com, its a controller box setup for the aw4. its all a preference thing between the auto and the manual. theyre both good transmissions
Apples to oranges...I agree!! For the type of wheeling I do mostly...ROCKS, I prefer an auto. I have had both, and the low speed rock crawling pace is best handled by an auto tranny, IMHO. I know that there are folks out there that prefer a manual, and that is thier choice, but for me, it's an auto.
I got my XJ because it had an AX-15 in it. I prefer a manual trans and would not compromize. That being said, I live in a small town and there are only a few XJs in the one JY...all of which have ATs. The AX-15 is a less readily available transmission so replacement with a JY variety is hard to find (at least in my case).

I had 5-speeds in my Toy truck and Toy 4Runner. Just like going from the carb to fuel injection from the 1st to 2nd toy. Going from the manuals to auto in my XJ. for slow speed rock and trail crawling. I'll never go back.
I prefer a stick on the street. more fun and gets better mpg plus I prefer the ability to gear brake because I spend alot of time in the mountains.
now with that said my wheeling terrain of preference is rocks and for rocks I agree the auto is the best way to go.
BUT considering the fact that my rig might go wheeling once a month if that (ALOT LESS here lately) I really dont see the point in havin an auto equipped rig for something I do maybe 5% of the time.
NOW if I was gonna build an XJ for wheeling it would absolutely start out with an auto trans
