is there any difference in aw4 transmissions for 2 wheel and 4 wheel? i know obviously the transfer case but i mean the tranny itself.

From what Ive read they are not interchangeable... EX: you cant pull the tailcone off of a 2wd trans and bolt a tcase up to it.
The 2wd output shaft is like 8" longer than the 4wd... Of course, this can be changed but you have to totally tear the trans apart.

Even if you are comparing 4wd AW4 to 4wd AW4 there are differences. Early AW4's were 21 spline output vs later 23 spline. Also the early years have different connectors for the wire harness vs newer years. Inside the case they are the same.

Transfer case not shifting.
Having a problem shifting my transfer case back up into 2wd. just finished putting the lever to the gears from the transfer case gear shift. but it wont come up past N. ?
