I'll probably swap my NP231 for a 242 while I'm at it.

And heck, I may as well do the engine rebuild, lol.

That's how my life goes with this Jeep. One ginormous snowball!
Why would you swap an NP242 in? The NP231 is a better transfer case.

I have heard that but want to do the same myself.
But my '00 is just a DD and thinking the Fulltime 4WD option would be a little better for getting around in the snow when I have to so.....

Like Ralph said. I want to be able to have the flexibility of Full-Time 4WD. I'm not wheeling this thing and we don't get a ton of snow where I live so being able to engage 4WD and leave it in while I travel about town without having to take it out of 4WD every time I hit a dry patch of road is a good thing.

My '88 had the 242 and we really liked it. I think I used part time 4WD maybe twice in all the years we owned it.

If you know someone who has a 242 and they want to do a swap, I'd be open to that. And I won't even ask more for mine since it is a "better" transfer case!

I had 2 Jeeps with the NP242 and never found a use for the full time 4x4, it was worthless in places that I did need 4x4, and where I didn't need 4x4 2wd worked fine. My current Jeep had an NP242 and I swapped it out for a 231 and never looked back. Not to mention I don't have the issues going in and out of 4x4 with the 231s like I did with the 242s.
