So here is where I am at. I have a 92 XJ that did not come with ac from the factory, and therefore has no electric fan under the hood. I was thinking about adding an electric fan on a relay / switch that I could manually control in case of overheating in traffic. Probably going to use the painless 30101 wiring harness, it seems like it would be sufficient. I was going to get a stock fan off of rock auto that I could cut the plug off of and use. However a friend of mine has a 2000 xj that he is going to be junking / selling for parts. He may let me get first crack at it for any parts, and I was wondering if the fan would fit like the factory fan would have on my 92?
Or, is there a different type / maker of a fan that will appear stock and work better?
Also, any other recommendations as to parts that I could grab that would be compatible to a 92?
Here is what I can tell you.
The part number for the fan in my '91 to '93 parts catalog is different then my '00 one.
Now what does that mean?
Not a clue.
So where the fan would go in the lower radiator support is there two slots?
Cause it just slips in those and is secured to the top radiator support with the
same screws that the overflow hose uses.
Just like your shroud does.
Of course that is assuming a '92 is set up like an '00 in that respect.
Here is a shot for you. This is an aftermarket one but fits in my '00.
Only reason I replaced the original was that it had a broken tab and bugged me.
well first, you should look over on the right side of your radiator, see if there is a plug hanging around there near the headlight wires, there might be. the XJ's of that year all seemed to have the same harness's. so just go to a JY and pull an electric fan and screws and mounting hardware and install it on your XJ. it should come on when you put the A/C control to any setting but heat, when the a/c compressor kicks in, so will the fan.
I think that there is a connector there, however my truck was not made with a/c, just heat and vent. I do not know if it will kick on and off if I hook it to the wiring that is there.
I am probably going to pick up a fan if I can find one at a junkyard around here, most first generation xj's don't make it to junkyards around here. They either are rescued or just crushed because there is nothing but rust left.
All XJ E-Fans are compatible and swappable as far as physcial fitment. The electrical plug changed on newer models so if you have a pre 97 you'll have to cut the plug off of the post 97 fan and put the plug from your old fan on it.
Post 97 fans have the advantage of having curved blades which makes the fan a lot more effecient, they move more air and make less noise.
If you have the body side harness in place already drop in the new fan and hook it up. Unhook your coolant temp sensor (on the thermostat housing) and if everything is hooked up right the fan will click on.
You can go into the wiring harness where it makes the bend at the firewall and goes forward to the PCM and splice into the blue wire with pink stripe and route a wire though a switch then to ground. The PCM grounds this wire out when it needs the fan to turn on for whatever reason then you can manually control your efan. This will store a trouble code in the PCM but will not activate the dash light so no worries there. YOu'll just have an extra code when you read them from now on. I forget what that code is off the top of my head.
downs- I figured that the pcm would only control the fan by the AC system, and being that it didn't come with AC, I didn't know if there would be a signal for it to come on. I am going to try to get the fan off my buddy's jeep and just use that as a guinea pig. The painless harness is only like 25 bucks, which was why I was going to use that, so I wouldn't have to cut the factory harness.

It's controlled via the coolant temp sensor as well. When coolant temps hit 217degrees (or there abouts) it activates the e-fan. That's why when you unhook the coolant temp sensor the computer activates the fan as a fail-safe since it has no coolant temp data.
Ah, I didn't know that. I thought it was mainly controlled by the ac system, since models made without ac didn't come with the fan from the factory. I am going to just plug it in to the factory plug and go from there. The truck doesn't overheat, I just figured if I could add an electric fan, in case of emergency (stop and go traffic in 100 degree Jersey heat).
