auto transmission problem
I tried to find similar problem with search but no cigar. My 88 Jeep Cherokee Ltd. seems to be slipping when I put it in "D". But if I manually shift to the "1-2" selector it will work fine. Then I manually shift back to "D". Reverse works fine. Oil is red and smells good. Mileage is about 220,000. I am original owner. Bought new in 88. Any suggestions?

This seems familiar
Hi, I'm new to this forum and have a tech question. My 88 Cherokee Ltd. w/auto trans. has slipping feel when starting trans. in "D" gear. However, when I manually shift to "L" to start moving it doesn't slip. I then shift to 2nd then to D and it works OK. Reverse works fine. Fluid level is within limits. Has been changed recently and smells normal. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks
What was it changed with? As soon as the warranty dropped on Cherokees Chrysler declared that their own in-house fluid, that meets none of the actual manufacturer's specifications ( well I suppose they're both transmission fluids), should be used because it's cheaper for Chrysler. As a result many of the parts counters dingbats give out ATF+4, same thing for oil service places. The transmission should be filled with Dexron III/Mercon (D/M). Slipping after fluid change is extremely common when this happens.

I'll try to answer all ideas best I can. Fluid change was with DexronIII, no filter change but looked clean. Fuse (10A) under dash pass. side is good. As far as trans. starting off in higher gear or not I'm not sure. If it is in "D" and starts rolling with much higher rpm than normal, I tried shifting to lower gear 1-2, and I can not feel a downshift but it immediately takes off as it should.
How do I determine if it is a TCU or solenoid fault?
Where are the TCU and solenoid located?
Should I check those before the NSS cleaning procedure?
