Default Auto Transmission Gurus I need some help

I apologize if this has been covered, I did a search and did not find the info I need.

I have a 96 xj 2wd with the auto trans. I can start it up cold drop it in gear and go, all seems perfect for a couple hundred yards then it is like the trans is in neutral, no forward or reverse. I let it cool and away it goes again. Seems to shift through the gears normally while it is cool?

I bought it this way and have little information as to the real progression of this issue. I got the was prefect then nothing all at once.

Fluid looks very clean with no evidence of burning. I am wondering about a plugged cooler? Do these recirculate fluid until the trans is up to temp and dump to the cooler, where there could be blockage?

Is there anything I should check first? I just want to eliminate the least expensive options first.

does it drop out of gear around turns? it almost sounds like it doesnt have a filter was the trans serviced recently at all? THe other thing you could try is putting an extra quart in it and see what happens

Corners did not seem to affect it. Doubt it had any recent service to the trans, but I can't be sure.

when filters clog up as the trans gets hot they will stop moving but the AW4 has a metal screen filter and they usually dont clog. hard seals will make it stop moving but again it would act up cold too not just hot

Check out the last post on this thread. It has some good info on auto transmission symtoms and solutions.

Running with a clogged filter or low fluid level will lead to permanent dammage. I swapped transmissions on the 2000 I was working on. Finally got around to taking the old one apart and found gunk in the passages and melted plastic in one of the clutch packs.

The filter on an AW4 is a metal screen all you need to do is just pull it off and clean it then put it back on. If the trans is overfull it wont hurt it certain transmissions it will but not the AW4 now im not saying put 4 extra quarts in it
