The "Spec" fluid for the AW4 is DexronIII/Mercon.

ATF4 is a newer product than the spec Dexron/Mercon fluid. Your transfer case won't care as its just gears and chains. The trans has solenoids, valves and clutches made to work with a specific fluid.

I wouldn't go to the Jeep dealer to buy DexronIII/Mercon. Most any auto parts place, and most convenience stores have it. Dealers charge a premium price for everything.

I bought GALLON jugs of it at Walmart for $9.99 each Dexron/Mercon III. Everybody else wanted $4+ for a quart. Since the Jeep and my Mazda both take the same I bought 4 gallons and started changing out the fluid 1 gallon at a time. Running several days before changing out the next gallon.
This way I at least have a reasonable amount of new fluid in the tranny without going through to much trouble. The Jeep I wasn't to worried about but the Mazda has a known so-so OEM tranny in it that needs constant changes every 25K.
