aussie locker questions
I have heard a lot of good things about these lockers. What are all of your driving impressions on and off road with them? I know they have a lot of people on their web site saying they are great. Whats your opinion? Do you get any rear sliding on the street if you go around a corner and run over some water? Also what about street duty in the rain?
I use the xj for the family and dont want them to have any trouble if i get the lockers for the front and rear.
I dont want to get stuck when we offroad

Ive got Aussie's front and rear in my XJ. The rear one will click when your driving around corners. As far as street driving Ive never had any problems in the rain. Does take a little bit of getting used to driving with them in 4wd on the street, especially in winter conditions.

Ive heard that if you install it in the front, it will only click when your in 4wd. If your just in 2wd on the street it wont click or do anything because its not engaged. is this true or do i have my info wrong?

If you have a front axle disco the front Aussie will not click when in 2HI on the road. If you don't have an axle disco both front and rear Aussies will click even in 2HI. I have had my Aussies for 2 years now and they are awesome. Good manors on the road in 2HI and TOTAL traction off road when in 4WD. I recently put a soild long side front axle shaft in my D30. Because the axle is in effect solid now hub to hub, even in 2HI the entire front drivetrain turns even 2HI. I was surprised by my Aussies yet again. I figured steering on road would be horrible but, it is still smooth as silk when driving on road in 2HI. I get quiet clicking from front and rear now but, it is just that, quiet clicking, no jerking or binding. If you have an NP242 and are fulltime 4WD, you may have some jerking to get used to. With my NP231 I have no torque going to the front wheels in 2HI.

I have one in the back, dont even notice it onroad anymore unless I have to make a 90 degree turn and accelerate really fast at the same time (I.E. pulling out of a driveway onto a main road). Offroad though it does what it says, locks the rear tires and give me way more capability. If you have to drive it snow I wouldn't put one in front, wont turn worth a **** in 4wd, plus to install one on a D30 you have to pop the ring gear off which for an inexperienced mechanic can screw stuff up.

I've had my Aussie for about a week. It works great. I have it in the rear of my 8.8 and it was super easy to install.
On road, I can't even tell it's back there. The only time I car hear some clicking, is doing a tight turn in my driveway or parking lot.
Northridge4x4 has the best prices on them. Even better than Aussie.
I agree w/using one in the front for snow. We get alot of snow here too, so I went w/a Detroit trutrac.

You'd have to go to a vacuum disco axle from an older xj, like 91 and older I think. It's not recommended, and plus if you ever drive in snow, and have to use 4WD, you're kinda screwed cuz the Aussie will be working.
I had to drive this morning in some pretty nasty winter weather. Jeep did decent in 2WD, great in 4WD.
